NULLIFIERS OF GOOD DEEDS
All praise is due to Allah, we thank Him, we seek His Help and guidance. Peace and blessings of Allah be upon His beloved servant and Messenger Muhammad, his households, companions and those who follow his teachings till the day of judgement.
O you the nation of Muhammad! Allah the Almighty has blessed you with many ways of good deeds and different acts of worship. It’s His bounty that He made the recompense of a good deed ten rewards and even more, while bad deed has only one equivalent. Allah said: (Whoever brings a good deed shall have tenfold of it, and whoever brings an evil deed, he shall be recompensed only with the like of it, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly).
Al’imam Albukhari and Muslim recorded in their Authentic books a Narration of Abu Huraira:
The Messenger of Allah said: (If any one of you perfects his Islamic religion, then his good deeds will be rewarded ten times to seven hundred times for each good deed and a bad deed will be recorded as it is).
Among the mercy of Allah Upon His Servants He multiplies the rewards of some acts of worship and wipes sins. The Messenger of Allah said: (Whoever says:
Subḥānallāhi wa biḥamdihi, one hundred times a day, will have his sins forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea). And another Hadith says: (Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith and in pursuit of Allah’s pleasure, will have his previous sins forgiven). He also said:
(Whoever does his wudu’ properly, then walks to (attend) the prescribed prayer, and prays with the people or with the congregation or in the Masjid, Allah will forgive him his sins). And so many Hadiths talk about multiplication of rewards and cleansing of sins.
Contrarily to that, Allah the Almighty has forbidden some acts upon His servants and set a limit. Whoever transgresses the limit of Allah will fall in His wrath. The Messenger of Allah said: (Allah, the Exalted, becomes angry, and His Anger is provoked when a person does what Allah has declared unlawful).
As good deeds become a means of earning Allah’s forgiveness and removal of the sin, bad deeds also nullify the good ones. A man can do a good deed and mix it up with bad one, thus invalidates what he has done well. Ibnul Qayyib Said: ” nullifiers of deeds are so many, doing good is not the most important matter, rather preservation of the good deeds from being nullified.”
Among the nullifiers of deeds are:
1- Apostasy: Allah said: (And certainly, it has been revealed to you and to those before you: Surely if you associate partner (with Allah), your work would certainly come to naught and you would certainly be of the losers). Another Verse says:(And they will never cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion (Islamic Monotheism) if they can. And whosoever of you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, then his deeds will be lost in this life and in the Hereafter, and they will be the dwellers of the Fire. They will abide therein forever).
2- Hating the teachings of Islam: Allah said: (That is because they hated what Allah revealed, so He rendered their deeds null). We should surrender and embrace the religion of Allah wholeheartedly. He created us and knows the best for us. Allah said: (Should He not know what He created? And He is the Subtle, the Aware). A poet says: ” How wonderful is it for those that are sinning or disbelieving in Allah. There are signs in everything showing Allah’s oneness. In any movement or silence there are witnesses on that”
3- Fearlessness in committing sins publicly or privately: An authentic Hadith mentioned that the Messenger of Allah said:(I certainly know people of my nation who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the mountains of Tihamah, but Allah will make them like a scattered dust.” Thawban said: “O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us and tell us more, so that we will not become one of them unknowingly.
” He said: “They are your brothers and from your race, worshipping at night as you do, but they will be people who, when they are alone, transgress the sacred limits of Allah). Al’imam Ahmad (May Allah have Mercy on him) heard some verses of poem saying (when you’re in a place lonely don’t say I’m alone but say I’m on one’s watch. Don’t think Allah is heedless or that you can hide for Him what you are doing) He Locked up his self in his room repeating it crying bitterly.
4- Oppressing and harming people: Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah said, “Do you know who the bankrupt is?” They said: “The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property”. He said, “The real bankrupt of my Ummah would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with Salat, Saum and Sadaqah (charity), (but he will find himself bankrupted on that day as he would have exhausted the good deeds) because he reviled others, brought calumny against others, un2lawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beat others; so his good deeds would be credited to the account of those (who suffered in his hand). If his good deeds fall short to clear the debts, then their sins would be entered into his account, and he would be thrown into the (Hell) Fire”.
5- Keeping dogs unlawfully: In a narration of Muslim, the Messenger of Allah is reported to have said: “He who keeps a dog for any reason other than to guard his property (lands) or his flock of sheep, his good deeds equal to two Qirat will be deducted every day.”
May Allah forgive our shortcomings and grant us His bounties and make Aljannah as our last abode.
